Misc. Notes
1825 - 15 December, James Shinabarger married Elizabeth G. Murdock in Wayne County, Ohio. Elizabeth is the second daughter of James Murdock to marry into the Shinabarger family.

Early records refer to James as “Shinnebarger” and “Shinnabarger”

1827 - Early Ohio Tax Records for Perry Township, Ashland Co OH "Shinnebarger, James, Ashland County, 1827 Perry Twp. Householders." 31,93

1830 - Federal Census Perry, Wayne Co., OH - James Shinabarger with male 20-30 (James 29), male under 5 (Joseph), two females under 5 (Mehetable and Hannah), female 20/30 (Elizabeth 22). James is living next door to Alva Murdock. Could this be a brother of Elizabeth?

1840 - Federal Census Mohican, Wayne Co. James S. “Shinebarger” male 30-40 (James 39), male 10-15 (Joseph), female 20-30 (Elizabeth), 2 females under 5 (Elizabeth and Lydia), 1 female 10-15 (Hannah).

1840 - Federal Census Mohican, Wayne Co. the James Huff with male 30-40 (James), male 10-15, male 5-10 (Moses) and male under 5 (James); female 30-40 (Sibbel), female 10-15 (Lydia), 2 females 5-10 (Mary and Lodemea).

There is a family, close friendship, with the James Huff family. This is the same family that is mentioned in “Ashland John” Shinabarger’s 1836 Will. John sold the land south of his homestead to James Huff. I include information on this family as James Huff Senior a widower and son James C., moved into Kosciusko Co. about the same time as James Sherman Shinabarger. The other close connection is that James Huff Sr., John Shinabarger Jr., and James S. Shinabarger all marry Murdocks, presumed sisters.

1850 - Federal Census on 12 Oct for District 179 Perry, Ashland Co., Ohio. In household are James S. “Shinnebarger” age 49, farmer, $6000 value of real property, born in VA; Elizabeth age 43, MA. children Joseph S. age 20 OH, Elizabeth 13 OH, Lydia 10 OH and James S age 4 OH. Living next door are daughter Mehetable and her husband Michael Michael Rizer.

1850 - Federal Census Mohican, Ashland, OH James Huff 46 and wife Sibbleam 40 reside with siblings Mary Ann 20, Lydia 19, Moses 15, James 13, Amanda A 10, Coryden 7 and Agnes 4.

1860 - Federal Census Perry, Ashland Co., Ohio, James “Shinebarger” with Elizabeth and son James age 14. Post Office Rowsburg.

1860 - Federal Census for Oneida, Clay Twp., Kosciusko Co., IN sites James C Huff age 22 OH, his father James 54, and children Moses, Amanda, Corydan, Agnes, Elmer.

1861-1862 - James was interviewed about his father John Shinabarger for Knapp’s History of Ashland Co., Ohio, published in 1863.94

1862 - On 30 October James C. Huff marries Elizabeth Hoppis in Clay Twp. Kosciusko Co. Indiana. Elizabeth was born in Indiana.

1865 - In 1865, “Jacob Shoemaker with his family, and the parents of Mrs. Shoemaker (James and Elizabeth Shinabarger), with their children, came to Kosciusko County, Indiana. Mr. Shinabarger bought a farm in Seward Township, our subject (Jacob Shoemaker) spending the first summer in helping him improve his land. Mr. Shoemaker then went to Silver Lake.” 95

1870 - Federal Census Seward Township, Kosciusko Co. IN, residing in Silver Lake are James S. born VA, Elizabeth born NY, their son James S. and wife Clara all farming.96

1873 - Elizabeth Murdock Shinabarger dies 29 July and is buried at the Silver Lake Cemetery, Kosciusko Co. IN.

1874 - Will Index Early Wills 1844-1920 for Koscuisko Co. James Shinebarger 1-29-1874 (3-64)

1876 - Death of James Sherman Shinabarger on 30 Dec. Buried Silver Lake Cemetery (also known as Lakeview Cemetery), Kosciusko Co. IN.

According to the Death Records of Montcalm Co. MI. Joseph Lake was the son of James Shinabarger and Margaret Huff.97 This could be Margaret Elizabeth Huff. James Huff was a neighbor and friend in OH. In 1833 John Shinabarger Sr. sold his remaining land in Wayne Co. to James Huff who was also a witness to John Senior’s Will. (have a note that says James is named as a son-in-law in 1837 Will as cited in "Wills of Wayne Co. Ohio" but I have not seen proof of this). The death of Joseph Lake was reported by his son Arthur Osborn. Because I can trace the Huff family, I believe the Death Certificate is in error.

1876 - James S. “Shinebarger” WILL mentions son Joseph L., daughter Mehetable Ann Rizer and her husband Michael R. Rizer; daughter Elizabeth A. Shoemaker and her husband Jacob W. Shoemaker; daughter Lydia M. Cutshall; son James S. Shinabarger Jr. got the farm. Son James S. is named executor along with Elias McClure. “I give and bequest to my son Joseph L. Shinebarger the sum of five dollars. He having received heretofor his full claim of my estate.”

Dated 26 Nov 1876. On 17 Jan 1877, Elmore Yocum admitted for probate the Will of James S. Shinebarger in Koscuisko Circuit Court. 98,99

1877 - 17 Jan., Elmore Yocum admitted the Will of James S. Shinabarger for Probate in the Koscuisko Circuit Court. BOOK 3, PAGE 64.

His son, Joseph Lake Shinabarger, only received $5; were there hard feelings?

1880 Federal Census Clay, Kosciusko, IN enumerates James Huff 43 OH, father born VA mother OH and Margaret Huff 38 with children Lydia A 14 and Amanda J 6.

1900 Federal Census Clay, Kosciusko, IN James C. age 67 OH, married in 1862, spouse Elizabeth Huff age 58. Married 38 years.

1910 Federal Census in Clay, Kosciusko, IN James C 72 and Elizabeth 68, married 47 years.

1916 - James C Huff died 27 Jan 1916. Buried in Milford Cemetery, Kosciusko Co.

1920 Federal Census on Center Road in Wayne, Kosciusko, IN Elisabeth Huff 78, widow, both parents born in PA. She is living in the home of son-in-law Asa Leckrone 45 who married daughter Amanda J 45. Elizabeth Huff born 3 May 1842 died 6 Feb 1927 Claypool, Kosciusko, IN. Buried in Milford Cemetery, Kosciusko Co.

What is the Shinabarger family link with James C. Huff and his wife of Margaret/Elizabeth Huff (and James Huff Sr). who appear in Joseph Lake’s death records, on 1774 John Shinabarger’s deeds and 1 his 1837 Will? Huff Sr. and two Shinabargers marry Murdock sisters. This mystery thickens with son Joseph Lake Shinabarger as his Michigan Death Certificate names James Shinabarger as father, names Margaret Huff as mother.

Knapp’s History of Ashland Co., Ohio. Pub. 1863 - Index lists: John, Joseph, Michael, and Solomon Shenebarger. John Shenebarger was on Militia roll (1844) for Vermillion Twp.
