On June 30, 1887, he married Alice R. Angell (1867-1935) in Bakersfield, Kern County, California. They had five children which all died as infants prior to 1901.
Known children:
• Naomi Florence (1890's-bef. 1900) age 3½
• Frank Orr (1892-1900) age 7
Sam died at the State Home in Fresno, California, of influenza during the world wide epidemic of influenza. He was a member of 'Woodman of the World'. The local Woodman of the World Lodge participated in his funeral service.
His wife, Alice also had influenza when Sam died and was unable to attend Sam's funeral, however she recovered.
