David was the son of Philip Shellenberger and Anna Maria Keller. He married Sarah Nail on 14 Mar 1837 in Richland, Ohio. They were the parents of 11 children: Harriet, Susan, George Halmer, Ida, 4 died in infancy, and 3 more.

Shellenberger, attorney at law, is a native of Mansfield, Ohio and a son of David and Sarah Naile Shellenberger, who were the parents of 6 sons and 5 daughters. In October 1878 David Shellenberger came to Humboldt county where he has since resided. He took a trip to California in 1849, crossing the Isthmus. He worked there in the mines two years and then returned by the same route....
Aug 19, 1891 - Algona Republican - Mr. John Chapin, of Humboldt, informs us that the item in last week's paper taken from the Marshalltown Times-Republican reporting the death of old Mr. Shellenberger was incorrect to the extent that Mr. Shellenberger is still alive. He was taken suddenly ill Sunday while leading his class and his life for a time was despaired of. At last reports he was a great deal better.
