Mary Lay was born near Knoxville, Tennessee on July 31, 1837. She married Abraham Howard Haynes near Knoxville on March 27, 1857, and the couple had 12 children. Mr. and Mrs. Haynes moved to Mercer County, Missouri in 1861 and moved to the Burr Oak community in 1865. Six years later, they moved to Atchison County.
She was survived by Elbert and Thomas M. Haynes of Washington, Ibbie (Mrs. George) Allen of Effington, Kansas, Miss Francis Haynes of Clarks, Nebraska, Ollie (Mrs. John) Bowland of Barnard, Missouri, Fred L. and William E. Haynes of Skidmore. Five children, James, John, Margaret, Tennie, and Alice Gray, as well as her husband, preceded her in death.
