Misc. Notes
Lydia's father didn't want his daughter marrying Grover. He had threatened any minister in Jackon County, Michigan, if they married them. Some of the information on their marriage certificate were fabricatd in order to get a minister to marry them.
The certificate (Record #13946, dated 16 Jan 1911) reads Grover Hyatt, a laborer, age 45, residence in Linwood, Michigan (false - he actually owned the farm next door to Lydia), father: Markus Hyatt (false), mother: Phoebe Bailey (misleading - she was a Carson by then), date of marriage: 16 Jan 1911, place of marriage: Bay City (false - they had already eloped). Lydia Giles, at home, age 23, residence in Pinconning, Michigan (false), father: Alvah Giles, mother: Addie Hogan (false - her surname is Hoagland).Married by George Elliott, minister. Witnesses: Mr. & Mrs. George Elliott.
On page 101 of Lydia's notebook the complete text reads:
Married Jan 16th 1911 in Bay City don't aske me where by an old minister and wife as witness. I was all pooed out going here and there. Left GL Hyatts early by sleigh to Jackson. took train to Saginaw where GLH had lived and thought we could get married, but couldn't get license as he must have said we were from Jackson (maybe) so could LAG got home, wouldn't go through that again took a trolley I guess to Bay City another place GLH had lived once lied where we were from but got license and found an old minister and wife who made us man and wife. stayed at an old friend over night "xx Patten" (might read Jim Patton?) next day by train to Vanderbilt Lots of snow."
