John M Marsh, son of Isaac Marsh, was born in 1827 near St. George, at what is now known as the Metz place. He grew up helping with the work on the farm and making charcoal to be used in the iron furnace. He married Eva Gainer in 1847 and moved on the divide between Brushy and Teters Creek, on land now owned by Alba Nestor. He later moved farther out the ridge on a farm which he bought from the Elliott brothers in 1872. Here a foot was crushed by a runaway team of oxen and later the leg was amputated. No ether was used and an ordinary saw was used to cut the bone, however it healed nicely and he followed his trade of shoemaking. --Written by Herbert Marsh
