About Serdar, Pavao_'Paul'
According to grandson Jeff, he was call Pajnu by his friends, like his drinking buddies - an honor to be called this. According to Nikola Serdar, he was known as 'the Giant'. He may have been a circus strongman when he was young. He would pick up several people at a time and bend steel bars. Because his shoulders were so broad, he always had to turn sideways to go thru a doorway. According to daughter Vi, his mother died when he was very young. Some time later, he was playing with caps and set their house on fire and it burned down. During his train travels through Europe, he saw "the forms of people in poses". This was most likely the casts of the victims of Pompeii. On the train he would pretend to have lice, by scratching himself alot, to get a seat when people would scatter. He was a 'Robin Hood' in Croatia. He successfully defeating 4 policemen in a fight. One story says he fled Croatia because of being in trouble with the law. Another story says he and his brothers were freedom fighters hiding in the mountains. They were given amnesty and allowed to leave the country. He emigrated with Mate & Dane Krpan, also from Sveti Rok. Mate was headed to Lake Bluff, IL to join his father, Marko Krpan. Dane was headed to St Louis, MO with Paul, to join the same friend, Dane Legarac at 216 S. 17th Street. He applied for citizenship on April 22, 1918 in DeKalb, IL at the age of 43. His application was signed with an 'X'. He applied again on January 4, 1938 in North Chicago, IL at the age of 62, just months before he died and before the process was completed. According to the ship's manifest for the SS Southampton that arrived at New York on June 2, 1912, he was the friend in North Chicago that Ante Balen, Mata Sekulic, and Stipan Stefanic were supposed to join. According to daughter Madeline, he owned a bar in North Chicago, IL. According to son-in-law Fred, he co-owned a pool hall in DeKalb, IL, worked for American Steel & Wire Mill in both DeKalb and North Chicago, and then worked for abt 15 yrs for North Shore Electric railway. The mill was established in 1891 in North Chicago as Washburn and Moen Manufacturing. It was later purchased by US Steel and became American Steel & Wire. First the mill made barbed wire for cattle ranchers out west, and then for the war effort during WWI. A mill was also built in DeKalb and both mills employed many Croations, who moved between the 2 towns to work in the 2 mills. In the 1950's, the North Chicago mill was one of Lake County's largest employers.
