I manage my uncle’s account. He died last year at almost 92. His father (my grandfather, Pavao Serdar) was born in the village of Sveti Rok, Lika-Senj, Croatia in 1875. We don’t know where any of his paternal ancestors were born, but we do know there is a Serdar family listed in the 1712 census of this Lika region, with 5 sons. The Serdar surname is identified as a member of a South Slavic ethnic group known as Bunjevci. There’s a Wikipedia page for them. The origin of the surname is from the Turkish language, meaning war commander, during the time of the Ottoman Empire in that region. There is a lot of evidence that our ancient ancestors were from Persia. His mother (my grandmother, Marija Japunčić) was born in Licko-Cerje, Lika-Senj, Croatia in 1886. Pavao immigrated to Illinois, USA in 1905. Marija also immigrated to Illinois, but in 1911. They married in 1913 and raised their family in Illinois. My uncle was the youngest of their 7 children.
