In Highland Recorder, December 17, 1909 from Gillman, Ill., December 9, 1909
Ed. Recorder:
Please send me the Recorder another year. It is a great pleasure to hear from Highland, my old home, though it has been nearly 40 years since I left there. I still think, however, of the old times - my boyhood days - and the boys of old Company D, 62nd Virginia regiment. Some of their names are: Philip Helmick, Marion Trimble, Gid Hiner, Wm. Beverage, Emanuel Propst, Jacob Vandevender, Tom Beverage, Samuel J. and J. W. Simmons, Daniel and Anderson Colaw, George Harper and some others yet living. But most of the boys have passed over the river, and it won't be long until none will remain to tell of the hardships and life of a soldier.
If you will publish this I will be much obliged.
Your friend,
Samuel Maury
